Malaysia’s Gamuda Berhad to build new MRT rail project in Taiwan

Malaysian contractor Gamuda Berhad and its joint venture (JV) partners have been awarded a design and build contract for the Xizhi Donghu Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems, New Taipei City Government, Taiwan.

The JV comprises Gamuda (75% stake) and two local companies, MiTAC Information Technology Corp (15%) and Dong Pi Co Limited (10%). The project is expected to be completed within seven years.

The scope of works involves 5.78-km elevated viaducts and trackwork, six elevated stations within Taipei Neihu District and New Taipei City Xizhi District, as well as system works including rolling stock, power supply, signalling, platform screen doors, communication system, central monitoring system, auto fare collection system and depot maintenance equipment.

This project is part of a major infrastructure initiative currently underway in New Taipei City, with the primary goal of expanding and improving the connectivity between Xizhi District and other parts of New Taipei and Taipei City. It aims to create an efficient and modern MRT system to meet the growing demands of New Taipei urban population.

According to Gamuda, the project will incorporate eco-friendly materials and sustainable landscaping, while also ensuring safety and accessibility for rural areas in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, all aimed at achieving better social equality and creating social benefit initiatives within the local community.
